Dave Davis, photography by Juliet Barr: May 2, 1987. My 81st of 8 shows. This was shakedown at the frost show at Stanford. Dead later played dew I prided myself on wearing the same clothes to the Dead as punk shows.
Eric Pooley: My brother, Chris Pooley, silkscreened this Aoxomoxoa T-shirt in the late 1970s while attending the Univ of MD in College Park MD; he sold them on the lot at Dead shows in the years before before Shakedown blossomed. This photo of me wearing the shirt was taken in the early 1980s somewhere in Westchester County, New York. Do you recall the year you made or acquired this piece? 1979 Do you remember the circumstances around this piece? Did you make it, trade for it, buy it, inherit? Was there something in particular that drew you to it? I just fell in love with the feeling of community evoked by this GD family photo on the back cover of Aoxomoxoa..
Annie Burrows, Oakland 1981-1982 bootleg t-shirt: This is a t-shirt that I made for my boyfriend to sell at the 1981-1982 Oakland New Year's Eve shows. The t-shirt used to be a baby blue color but it faded. I didn't save any of these for myself, but a dear friend contacted me last May to say that she had this shirt and that she was mailing it to me. I can't remember how many of these we made, but they were all given away or sold either at the Oakland shows or before. This t-shirt comes with a bittersweet memory. The friend who mailed it to me in May died of Covid 3 months later. She was a wonderful person...full of joie de vivre. 😔 I miss her so much.

Abby Rand: [Pictured] is an old hat I found in a vintage store up in Maine. it was just such a perfect hat, definitely worn by a dope old man for decades. I believe the original logo was for a construction company. I rocked it like that for a while, but then was inspired by John Andrews (I have to give him 100% full credit here) who sewed a Europe 72 patch onto a hat and made it 100x cooler. I remembered I had some Petrified Goods baggies kicking around which I wasn't wearing much because I was kind of over Petrified Goods as a concept, so I ripped the patch off those and sewed them onto this hat. Voila, the perfect hat.

Barbara Feinstein: One view of my chambray shirt that I probably wore to all the [shows]. A shirt I embroidered after some shows I saw or loved songs.
Barbara Feinstein: My memory is kind of faded now. I know that my standard clothes were jeans, tee of choice, my embroidered shirt and a black leather jacket with silver flight wings that were gifted to me by Vietnam vet fighter pilot friend. I also always had my side pouch to hold my things. It was made for me by a dear friend back in the day.

Abby Rand: [Pictured] is this great old chambray button down I had been wearing to pieces. I was working in a surf shop where we were all given shop names as an initiation (don't ask). I had just received mine, Birdie, and as a christening present, my colleague Dash, who was 1) a fellow Deadhead 2) gaining a cult following doing custom embroidery, sewed my shop name and a dancing bear onto my shirt. I had always been a deadhead, but getting my first piece of customized gear felt like getting your first jersey with your name on it as a pro athlete. I know that sounds ridiculous, and even though I had been a Deadhead my whole life, this felt like officially joining the club. I wore it to my first Dead and Co show that summer. I love that it's kind of low key - when everyone else is wearing tie dye and wild stuff, you have to look closely to realize it's there. And don't get me wrong, I have as much Online Ceramics and Liquid Blue as the next head, but sometimes it's fun to be a little more low key and subtle with it. I believe Dash is also now a very talented designer, so it makes me smile to have this little snapshot of his early work

Justin Taylor: I own a Vegas Dead '92 shirt that was given to me as a gift by a friend who found it in a thrift store. I actually don't know whether it's bootleg or official. The last two times I've worn it to shows people have attempted to buy it off of my back. (The shirt has a small cameo in this long essay I published recently about going to Phish's spring tour.) One guy told me it's worth four or five hundred dollars but I've never tried to confirm that--though I do think I'll stop wearing it to shows. I'm attaching two photos (both from Phish lot, 5/29/22).
